The Fifth Element was on cable last night, and I got sucked in again. This is one of those movies -- Super Mario Brothers being another -- that for some reason I just can't get enough of. Reading through the reviews on Rottentomatoes.com it seems that even the reviewers that liked it had reservations I didn't share; like it being too long, or boring. I think it's really funny, and really vivid in a way most movies never manage. There are jokes in every scene that are just thrown away, and the ridiculous Gaultier costumes make everything seem absurd. Gary Oldman as the bad guy Zorg, is particularly funny, without being jokey. He never hams up his villainy, he just fully inhabits a truly odd sort of petty villain.
And at its heart, it's just a dorky love story, just like Super Mario Brothers. Maybe I'm just a sucker for dorky love stories dressed up in goofy sci fi trappings.
