Washington Spy Games? [Sep. 4th, 2004|01:19 am]

This article is really significant; if you haven't registered with WaPo, it's worth it for this:

Apparently the FBI is investigating the whole raft of NeoCons in the Department of Defense, something that's been rumbling around Washington and the blogs for the last few weeks. What's new in this article is that it ties people working directly for Dick Cheney to the investigation somehow.

As with the Pollard case, the problem is that there really is no bright line between what people can give the Israelis; the ties to their Intelligence and ours are extensive and both formal and informal. I'm perfectly willing to give those guys the benefit of the doubt. It could well be that they were subtly encouraged to pass information along, but with plausible deniability, so that when things go pearshaped they can leave a doofus like Douglas Feith twisting slowly in the breeze.

It's understandable that Israel wants to stay ahead of the curve with respect to Iran and the US. I don't blame them. This president and his enablers are liable to invade anyone that looks crosseyed at them, and any further Middle Eastern adventures on the part of the US have profound consequences for Israel.

I get the feeling that the real problem here is that people like Cheney are into the whole power game; the international geopolitical chess match. The problem is that the smart guys are blinded by ideology, and the ones who aren't so smart are under their spell. And the president is susceptible to anyone who reflects back to him his manichean world view.

I guess I don't mind so much that US foreign policy is so relentlessly ruthless, except that it's also so effing dumb.
