Post Modern Hijinks [Apr. 25th, 2003|07:16 am]
Okrzyki, przyjaciel!
So I had one of my long journal entries done, having blabbed on about how I think about post-modern literary criticism in my every day life. And I wanted to illustrate it with a picture of Jacques Derrida so I did an image search ... and I clicked on the mouse and Internet Explorer died.

So you've been spared. Trust me, I was witty and insightful. Imagine what I wrote that has disappeared. You can probably imagine something much more profound than what I wrote.

But while I'm on the subject, here's a random quote frojm Derrida: "Monsters cannot be announced. One cannot say: 'here are our monsters', without immediately turning the monsters into pets."

Pretty clever. I can turn that into a gloss on George W Bush and his Axis of Evil: By naming an Axis of Evil, Bush tames it; they are no longer independent actors on the world stage, they are essentially his stooges. No matter what they do, good or evil, they're no forever just placeholders in his agenda. His agenda (which arguably does little to control terrorism, or even make the world a better place in any noticeable way) requires villians to strive against. He's in effect enacting a narrative. He becomes St. George, and he goes off in search of Dragons.
