I have middlebrow tastes [Jul. 3rd, 2005|11:16 am]
Okrzyki, przyjaciel!
There, I said it. As someone who grew up in a family who had Picasso prints on the wall, whose father was an orchestra conductor, there has always been the idea that High Art Is Important, and that We Are People Who Appreciate It.

Unfortunately I can no longer live the dream. I fall asleep in classical music concerts. I read science fiction all the time, and have a hard time getting past the first page of any book of literary importance. And last night I watched "Chocolat" and thought it was wonderful. I watch TV cop shows like "NCIS" and "Medium" and LIKE THEM.

What does this mean, really? Dunno. I'm gonna go check an episode of "Little House On The Prairie" and I'll get back to you.

I was mostly kidding, but isn't entertaining but not edifying/enlightening/emotionally moving the essence of middlebrow? Of course, if you don't even find virtuosos entertaining, that's a different story.

ps. I fall asleep in classical music concerts all the time, sometimes when I'm in them. Also, I thought Chocolat was okay.

Virtuosity is one thing, using it in the service of truly significant music is another. There are a lot of concertos that do little more than say "HAY LOOK AT ME." The whole idea of pieces that require virtuoso skill is to show off an expensively gotten, rare facility with an instrument.

Sure it's entertaining, but what does it serve? I'm more impressed by someone who can rescue Trois Gymnopedie from overexposure and make it new.

Spoken like a true highbrow! I don't disagree at all.
