Stopped down to the hip hop show last night, because friends of mine were playing, and of course I missed them because I was mixing down Rachel Kann tracks. Carnage and Booka B were playing. I guess they're part of the Twin Cities scene, Carnage was on Eyedea's last joint, and Eyedea tours with Atmosphere, yadda yadda.

Carnage is a phenomenal MC, and Booka B is a really gifted DJ. Booka B did some beatboxing that sounded like something off Schematics records. Not often you hear someone beat box with ghost hits and snare rushes. Carnage is one of those guys who is so tight on the mic that the audience was either shaking their heads in amazement or pumping their fists.
One of my favorite lines was "Gonna beat ya down worse than Oprah in the Color Purple." which is so not-funny politically incorrect that you laugh at him despite yourself. He's an intimidating presence too, one of those guys (like DJ Deeon and DJ Slugo) who is relatively short (5'6" to 5'8") but packing 200+ pounds of muscle. They wear it like Ghetto body armor.

Exhibitionist Girl (whom some of you will remember) was there and stumbled on stage to engage in suggestive gyrations with Rampage. He was able to work with for a while, but eventually she had to be dragged offstage. Aren't a lot of MCs who can keep control of a show with some floozy 'airing the girls' and pulling her pants down next to him. She was rubbing up on Tack Fu as well back by the bar, saying he was her boyfriend and that he was gonna kick my ass for taking pics of her Saturday. Whatever. I don't know if she hooked up with Ramage but she was sitting in his lap when I left. I honestly don't know what to make of girls whose presentation is so overtly sexual. It seems kind of desparate and creepy.

Tack had the best comment on her: "Guy wanna try summa that best be wearin two condoms." Tack is a white Catholic boy from near Dubuque -- can't get any whiter than that -- but being in love with the whole world of hip hop, his speech is Ebonics with corny midwestern white-bread delivery.

An interesting article about what the author argues is the best week ever in Rock & Roll in Salon.

I don't like to indulge in nostalgia, but for me that article brings back that time to me quite vividly. I was in 7th Grade, a girl I liked actually had a crush on ME, the Beatles had just made an album so good my entire block was crammed into one kid's bedroom listening to it start to finish, over and over. My friend Bill's dad worked at the Haight Ashbury free clinic, my friend Mary Ann was at Altamont with the Red Cross, my uncle was being drummed out of the Air Force Reserve for marching in an anti-war demonstration, and the Supreme Court had just ruled public school dress codes illegal. Every night I went to sleep listening to pop radio from San Francisco, which was exuberantly, wildly eclectic. You could hear the Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, the Stones, Jefferson Airplane, BB King, the Seeds, and the Archies in the same hour.

I'll stop now. I'm starting to sound like Hank the Tank.

I don't know what Lubavitch is precisely, but there are a lot of Chabad Lubavitch around the country.
