"Van Helsing" was a really good time. The plot is silly swiss cheese, and the dialog veers from being laughably bad to occasionally succeeding to be intentionally humorous. But the CGI is really good, and blends better with the live action than in any movie I've seen recently. Definitely worth watching.

"Joy Luck Club" -- watched this during the laying around in the afternoon phase of the weekend. Really good despite being a sort of Lifetime tear-jerker sort of movie. Amy Tan's novel from which it is adapted is really strong storytelling, which gives the movie more to work with than most movies.

Prime Suspect 1 on PBS. Prime Suspect 2 starts next week. I can't think of a more compelling TV police procedural. The only American series that has anywhere near the grit is The Shield, but The Shield is really over the top, where Prime Suspect's ethical murk is a little more nuanced.

my dream

I generally don't enjoy reading other people's dreams, which is why I don't post my own, but this one is too weird:

I have become one of George W. Bush's speechwriters, and in the dream I'm very concerned that I do the best job possible. So to write it, I make a fort in the living room with couches and then fill it with water, and float in it. Not sure how this facilitates the speechwriting process.
