Swift Boat Nutters [Aug. 21st, 2004|10:15 am]

Sent this to my congressman. If you are as pissed off about the 'Swift Vote Veterans For Truth' as I am, I'd encourage you to do the same.

Congressman Leach,

I am disturbed by the recent 'attack ads' being run by the "Swift Vote Veterans For Truth." This group is funded by Republican Party contributors, and their book and commercials contain accusations about John Kerry that are not supported by any evidence.

What I want Congressman Leach to do is to ask publicly for President Bush to repudiate the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. He and his spokeman have said that they do not question Senator Kerry's service, but so far they have refused to condemn the advertisements.

I am a Democrat living in Congressman Leach's district, but I have always admired his willingness to take principled stands, sometimes contrary to the prevailing position of the Republican Party. In particular, his vote against authorizing the invasion of Iraq -- and yesterday's call for bringing American troops home -- show his willingness to consider issues on merit rather than ideology.

I'm hoping he can display this same honest independence, not by helping the Kerry campaign, but by holding the President to high standard of conduct that we should expect of every president, whether we voted for him or not.

Heaven Or Hell? [Aug. 21st, 2004|08:45 pm]

Made some hot sauce today that got thumbs up from the hot sauce people in the house and choking coughs and tears from the novices.

I went out to where a few months ago Geralyn had planted some pepper plants and got a good handful of assorted Jalepeno, Scotch Bonnet and Cayenne Peppers. Threw 'em in a blender with a medium onion and a skinned, deegooped tomato. Simmered it on the stove with a little salt and rice vinegar until it had cooked down a bit.

It was dead simple, and as good as a lot of bottled hot sauce. I want to try sweet-based hot sauce next, like maybe mango + habanero + ginger.

Lucky for me I knicked my finger while I was chopping stuff and got some scotch bonnet juice in the raw cut. Yowsers!
