|Labor Day Track

When I read my e-mail in my studio at home I usually have a guitar in my lap that I'm randomly fooling around with. After doing that for about an hour today, I decided to record a few minutes of what I was fooling around with. I was running the guitar direct into my venerable Yamaha Promix, and using a delay and reverb from the mixer, then going digital from the mixer into the computer.
Then I did a second take, through my tube microphone preamp cranked all the way up. Added some effects, a bit of Wavestation pads, and this is what I came up with. I don't know how grand the resulting track is but it does represent 'automatic' playing, in that nothing was planned, or edited or quantized.
I don't have very good rhythm; when I record guitar I either have to play the parts over and over again until I can play them in time, or edit heavily after recording to line stuff up. But I do have a sort of internal 'free' rhythm, in that when I'm not playing to a metronome, I feel where I want to place notes in time.
