On the wall of the New Pioneer Coop Grocery Store in Iowa City, Iowa, is bolted a stainless steel ashtray for sidewalk smokers. The curious thing about it is that it has a lock on it, and not one of those crappy towel dispenser locks, but a real lock with tumblers, not unlike the lock on an apartment mailbox.|
Which means that someone has to carry a key around for those joyous occasions when they have to take all the cigarette butts out and throw them away.
If I had an ashtray in a public place, and someone wanted to steal my cigarette butts, hey, I'd let 'em.
Coincidentally, all the New Pi employees who smoke do so outside the backdoor, near the dumpsters, where God intended hourly-wage workers to slowly kill themselves with tobacco. No one stands on the sidewalk in front of a health food grocery store smoking.
