This post by pgdf alerted me to Judee Sill -- a singer-songwriter contemporary of Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Karla Bonoff etc, who died relatively unknown in 1974. You can read about her trainwreck of a personal life but it's probably better to keep that out of your mind when you hear her songs..|
I don't know if I've heard anyone in recent memory who has slayed me so completely. On the surface she sounds like any number of early-70s singers, but there's something deliciously weird about her: her UFO/Supernatural/Religious preoccupations, her austere voice that sounds quiet loud even when it is loud, her unconventional song structure. She manages to be a master of her musical artifice, but at the same time seem so raw and immediate emotionally.
Anyway, I found her album "Heart Food" on the torrents, so here is The Kiss.
