Future Rocks

Future Rocks played here last night, and they, err, rocked, but in a very interesting and enjoyable way. The group is a trio, with a guy on keyboards -- a couple of Nords and a Minimoog, a guy playing bass and an MS2000, and a guy on drums -- a trap set plus a Roland Octapad. Their basic thing is long tracks based around repetetive grooves, with the variation and interest coming from the interaction between keyboard textures and the drums. The bass player and the drummer both used sample pedals to capture and repeat loops. They reminded me mostly of Can, but they seem also to be down with more current electronic stuff -- they do a covers of artists like Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and Ladytron. The Ladytron cover was very Italo-disco sounding, and it would definitely be a great track to have to play out.

They've been playing together for nearly 2 years, without releasing a CD, though apparently one is in the works. But there's some representative tracks up on their website, http://www.futurerock.net/, and even better, there are a slew of live recordings on archive.org http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=future%20rock
