Mahler Resurrection [Jun. 1st, 2003|02:13 pm]
Okrzyki, przyjaciel!
For my son Sean's high school graduation, I transferred Mahler's 2nd Symphony (The Resurrection) from vinyl to CD, to help him along in a newfound interest in classical music. I'd not listened to it since seeing it performed 20 years ago or so, and I'd forgotten how moving and deep it is. Since it was a vinyl transfer, I basically listened to it start to end very closely, in case it skipped or something. By the end of the fifth movement I was crying.

Sometimes it takes 80 minutes to express one musically idea fully, and this is one such. The recording is of Bruno Walter with the New York Philharmonic. He died in 1962, so this was a 50's recording -- one of the first stereo recordings of symphonic works. Walter actually knew Mahler well, which lends an authority to this performance hard to find elsewhere.
