PLUR BITCHEZ [Mar. 7th, 2006|09:27 am]

Frankie Bones says he invented PLUR

Do you remember the specific event during which you gave your famous speech?

Oh, yeah yeah. I devised the PLUR thing back in '90. Actually, it was PLUM (Peace Love Unity Movement). It was during a time in New York City where the black against white thing was really, really apparent. It came out of the Palladium in Manhattan, the area where all the kids went clubbing. At the time, a bunch of homeboys started trying to talk to my girl as if she was a stripper. And I wasn't having it, and usually when you don't have it, you put your hands up, and you throw, right? For me, that was too easy, to just fight. I'd rather battle you with words, and I did just that saying, "Fellas. Fellas. That's my girl. I'll tell you what, I'm giving you this tape, right? I want you to listen to it, and whenever you listen to it, yo, my phone number is on there, and, yo, just realize that you say whatever you want about my girl, man, but I'm not here for that. I'm going home with her and you're not." Of course they listened to the tape and were part of the early rave scene and came to all the parties.

That's pretty standard old rave knowledge. He gave a speech at one of the Storm Raves back in '93. My friend Rob was there for it.

That's almost as good as the rave fight between him & Beltram on Discogs.

I know you're all about speaking your mind, Tom, and letting the chips fall where they may. But as becomes abundantly clear on 313, everyone's got their own side of the story, and discretion truly can be the better part of valor.

Besides, shit-talking Frankie Bones is pretty much redundant. Nothing you can say about him will damn him in other peoples' eyes half as well as the stuff that he says and writes himself.

As for Frankie and PLUR -- if you look in my next post, Frankie is acknowledged by many people to have introduced 'Peace Love and Unity' theme back in the day. Laura La Gassa attributes the 'Respect' on the end to Brian Behlendorf. This is of course an academic point, since 'PLUR' seems to be a quaint relic of a more innocent age.

But Frankie is not completely full of shit to claim the introduction of PLU(R) -- within the specific context of raves. There were thousands of first hand witnesses of the 'famous speech' and no one I've been able to find with Google contradicts the broad outlines of what Frankie says.

More to the point, as is demonstrated by citing of the Elvis Costello/Nick Lowe 1979 song "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding", the whole PLU(R) thing was in the air well before 1990. Memes like this seem to really spread once they get started.

Now, this really is all very quaint at this point. Rave really is dead, and whatever it is that we have now is ... whatever it is. And Frankie Bones still plays records I don't care for. And he still has a big mouth. But it's not like he's killing brown people by the thousands -- his crimes are strictly small change.

Man, that's hot. I'd love it if I were out with a guy and some idiots started talking shit about me, and my man's reaction was "Here's a mixtape. You can say what you like about my girl, respect isn't the issue, but let's talk about my ego, boys - she's going home with me. Long as we're clear on that, talk away and enjoy the mixtape."

Hot hot hot.
