The Album Mangoni by Nahawa Doumbia

This was 50 cents at a garage sale. If you've never heard music from Mali it's pretty nice, and the loopiness of it is almost techno. Begging for remixing. From the liner notes, her lyrics are pretty feminist and political, if that matters.

I do love her voice; it has a bit of a rough edge, but she has what the best singers have: she opens her mouth and lets it rip and it's fabulous, but sounds as natural as talking about the weather. Aretha Franklin had that when she was young. Speaking of which I bought Aretha's first LP on Atlantic yesterday at a garage sale for $2 ... full of covers of dorky pop songs. Apparently Ahmet Ertugen hadn't really figured out what to do with her.
