How to keep a buttload of music on-line for free

1. Sign up for a gmail account. If you already have one, sign up for another! All you need is a different e-mail address than the one you originally signed up with.

2. Mail mp3s as attachments to this new gmail account.

3. Gmail helpfully has a 'play' link if it detects a mp3 file as an attachment, with an embedded player.

Things that aren't so great about this scheme:

1. Itunes it ain't -- you can play one song at a time.
2. they limit attachments to 10 meg total per message.

Corollary: Once you email an MP3 to someone else, it's still there in your 'Sent' folder.

Currently you get 2.8 gigabytes of storage. Since attachments are stored text-encoded that means you can put something in excess of 1 gigabyte of tunes up. The inconveniences involved with this storage scheme are offset by the fact that your files are backed up by Google, and they're accessible anywhere there's a computer with the internet and a browser.
