BEWARE: Windows XP SP3 [May. 20th, 2008|12:20 pm]
Okrzyki, przyjaciel!
I thought I'd done my homework. I thought everything would be fine. But no, updating Windows XP to Service Pack 3 bricked my Athlon X2 desktop. If you care about such things you've probably heard that SP3 is screwing up a bunch of Athlon machines. But the articles mention several attributes (HP OEM XP install on Athlon machines, particular Asus motherboards) of systems that had trouble, and I had something different.

Didn't matter. No one cares what I went through -- including a call to Mumbai or Bangalore for MSFT tech support -- but what it took to fix it was a repair install of Windows XP SP2. Luckily I had a disk with SP2 and all the cumulative patches up to a few months ago slipstreamed in, or it would have been the tedious woe of installing XP Original, Installing SP2, Installing all the updates, etc.

Cheers to Microsoft for repair builds working. Jeers to Microsoft for releasing a patch into the wild that will completely fux0r a large number of systems out there. I have many years of experience making computers work, imagine someone's granny who accidentally installs SP3 and can't figure out why here computer broke.

So much for Microsoft QA.

i have had problems too and it only accidentally installed it. gah... i am out of room on my EEE PC and no way to backroll easily.

also based on personal experience, MS forces its employees/contractors/business guests to update or else no network access so they are often victims of their own dumbness.... regularly.

back your data off your laptop and reinstall xp sp2. You might need a USB CDROM but you can probably borrow one. Since you're enough of a nerd to make it happen, maybe take the time to create a slipstreamed XP SP2+Hotfixes CD. I guess you can slipstream in drivers as well...

it just installed xp sp2 2 weeks ago and it took the whole weekend. so i am pretty annoyed at the prospects given that i either clicked wrong or forgot to turn off updates.

We inherited a Dell a few weeks ago as a second desktop, and I briefly toyed with the idea of leaving XP on it but decided against and put Ubuntu on it instead. Feeling good about that.
