This is one that snuck up on me -- I wasn't really trying to make a track at all, but was messing around with that Puremagnetik Purple drum kit. Then I was looking for source code for a lowpass filter and came across the crudest possible approximation of a Moog Lowpass Filter as a VST. It sounded crappy in an interesting way on the drum kit. Then I made a crusty 808 kit in Impulse and programmed some repetetive beats. Added some loops from recordings of an AM radio I did with Stewart Walker, and that's about it. I sequenced it live in Ableton Live, and cleaned up some of the clumsier automation moves, and there you have it.
Very dirty sounding, which I don't usually do. It reminds me of some of the stuff that Tom Butcher and Mike Perkowitz were doing 15 years ago. I had a X09 (Tom Butcher alias) cassette that rode around in the tape player in my rusty Rabbit until the tape player died. Kinda has that vibe, but no 808 cowbell. I don't know how I did it exactly but there's an 808 clap in there that is by far the ugliest clap sound I've ever used. In a good way.
