|Friday Afternoon Track "Splash 1" 13th Floor Elevators

This is such a lovely ballad, and it is so redolent of 1966 it made me forget being at work and remember being eleven years old in the Bay area, where the most important thing in lives of my circle were The Beatles and Batman. We were getting exposed (via older, cooler siblings) to the new psychedelic sounds coming out of San Francisco, and in my neighborhood, there were three garage bands. Literally. They used to practice in the garages of their Eichler houses with the garage door up to annoy the neighbors. The high school boys let their hair grow until it flipped at the collar and wore paisley shirts over turtleneck dickeys, bellbottoms, and square toed suede boots that zipped up the side. We all thought they were unbelievably cool.
