I was talking to a friend of mine who's a hip hop MC who used to be a much shadier individual last night. I told him that not only did he seem happier, his writing and performance had improved. His response was "Thanks, like Barack says, time to put away childish things."
I fully acknowledge that I've remained in many regards juvenile in some respects well past the point where it's seemly. I'm working on that -- I think that it's possible to keep some childlike enthusiasm for the good things, while leaving behind the immaturity.
But back to Obama. First it's a quote from First Corinthians 13, which is my favorite bible verse, for reasons I've talked about before. It's the verse of the bible that is the least preachy and the most pertinent to daily life on all scales.
Second, it's a blistering critique on the last eight years of Bush. Bush was arrogant, petulant, and willful. He preferred gut feelings over facts. He promoted the immediate gratification of unbridled use of fossil fuel over concerns about global warming and dependence on foreign oil. His hostility to proper regulatory oversight led the financial industry to be seduced by magical thinking. He used agression instead of negotiation in dealing with Iraq and Afghanistan. One thing modern parents all know when they deal with children is to tell them to "use your words." We all know how THAT turns out with respect to Bush.
In short, the most appropriate adjective for the last 8 years is childishness. Without adults in charge, things went wrong on a scale we may never fully grasp. It's time to grow the fuck up. If Obama does nothing else but bring some adult supervision to the Government, he'll have done a lot. I hope he can do more than that, but it's a good start.
