what is it with US Representatives Named King? [Jan. 26th, 2009|02:46 pm]

In Iowa we have the lovely and talented Steve King, a cast-iron moron if ever there was one.

Then there's Pete King from New York's Fighting Third. His latest brilliant idea? Requiring by law that camera phones make a shutter noise.

This is called the "Camera Phone Predator Act." Who are these camera phone predators? And, if this law passes, what's going to stop them from buying a phone that predates the Act, or... I don't know ... buy a digital camera?

If you look at this guy's legislative history, he seems to specialize in non-binding resolutions and petty bullshit. He's the guy who wanted to make it illegal for Telemarketers to call between 5 and 7 PM. Sure it's annoying, but with all the real problems in the world, WTF?

He's also the brilliant guy who supported both the terrorist organization the Irish Republican Army, AND spent the last 7-odd years beating his chest about 9/11.

I'm sure there are honorable, intelligent Republican legislators left, but they're an endangered species -- they're all retired or retiring. We'll be left with just the mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging bully boys on the Republican side of the aisle. Which, though it's great to have such a wide target for ridicule, unfortunately means there's no effective check on the Democratic party's worst instincts. I much prefer it when there's a reasonable opposition keeping the majority party honest. When all you have are morons like the Kings, Steve and Pete, you don't have an opposition, you just have an ongoing embarrassment.

That shutter-noise law is in effect in Korea. All mobiles sold after 2003 (or 2004?) have it. It was enacted there because people were taking loads of upskirt shots on the subway stairs.

If I can't take upskirt shots of 12 year old girls on stairs while wearing nothing but a trenchcoat with a pocket full of memory cards, then the terrorists have won.

Doesn't he realize that if they're going to make this a law, pervs will just start shooting videos instead? Is he going to make it a law that all phones sound like an 8mm camera while videotaping then?

For that matter, I know something about cell phones -- if the grill of the speaker is covered you can barely hear them. I know this because I never hear my phone when it's in my pocket, and it scares the shit out of me if it's laying on my desk, it's so loud.

So this doofus is going to pass a law you can defeat with a little square of duct tape. Brilliant!
