The diabetes thing is annoying but I need to get past that. I'm as compliant as I can be with the diet changes, and my sugars are still running a bit high, but I feel OK, and I'll talk to my GP about some sort of meds. I've been taking chromium twice a day, which my GP suggested, though it's effect on sugar metabolism is controversial. I'm going to try and lose a lot of weight -- according to my BMI my fighting weight should be 190, and I'm at about 265.
The losing weight and quitting smoking are in direct conflict; even a month out, I still crave cigarettes, and my tendency is to want to eat more as a result. I am far enough out that I can smell smoke on people, even very subtly -- if I get on an elevator that a smoker has been in, I can smell it.
I have some consolation in that my mother's family -- in which several of my relatives have Type II diabetes, are in general long-lived, and vigorous until quite late in life, even when their diet and exercise regime is worse than mine. So I got that going for me.
