|So how vain am I?

angryrobot, entropichusk, and auditorium were recognizable, but there were also people I don't know from the UK, UK, Japan and Australia.I posted links to tracks I've done lately and not gotten any response via e-mail or comments. Since I'm needy and conceited, I went looking through logs on the server, and was surprised to see that 30 people at least started downloading my latest track, and 48 people have been to my '2003 Retrospective' page. |
So hey, don't feel bashful about responding when I post a track. It's a major boost to hear from people who like them. I can even use constructive criticism. I don't even mind 'YOU SUCK!'
And it's not just me; I listen to people's stuff on line all the time and respond, and everyone seems excited to hear from someone, ANYONE. Those of you who don't make music have no idea of how the palpable pressure of being ignored affects those who do. Making tracks is something you do mostly by yourself and it can be pretty lonely, and it's something that you do as a way to communicate with others.
Of course as an artist, you should be doing it because you have no choice, because it's an inner drive to above all satisfy yourself. Maybe, but one also wishes to be noticed, admired, and loved for what a clever music maker you are. Oh and sometimes it would be cool to make money out of it.
Anyway, thanks for listening.
Thanks for the kind words I was so blatantly fishing for. The sound you're talking about is white noise through a band pass filter, run into a delay.
The lead line is 2 sawtooths through a comb filter and a ladder filter in series.
What '2003 Retrospective' page?
PS. That was a track? I thought my soundcard was acting up again.
I get that from time to time as well. I was just told "Aidan won't eat while you make that noise".
Yer raising that kid right. I was playing Husker Du "Zen Arcade" in the car one day when Lucas was about 4 and he told me "turn off that loud monstery music, Dad!"

i'm sorry, i'm really bad about hearing stuff because usually i read the link when i'm at work and can't really listen to stuff easily :-/
I listened to it at work and then got busy. You should just do what you do and not care what anyone else thinks. I know that's easier said than done and I'm a hypocrite for saying it.
I could offer my opinion, but I'm not fluent in the world of techno-speak. I'm not familiar with half the electro people you all talk about, so my opinion wouldn't be very helpful anyway.
sadly, i am on dialup for an indefinite period of time. if i ever get things more settled and back together i will join the listening crews. until then it's too hard for me

I download pretty much everything you do, and it goes straight to my iPod for further enjoyment on the subway. This latest Beethoven bit is awesome - I think you need to worry less about getting everything on the beat; the natural swing and rough-hewn emotional overwroughtness of the original is what makes it cool against the backbeat.
Have you ever listened to Busdriver? He does a rap set to the first part of Bach's Flute Sonata in B-minor and it's pretty amazing.

I know what you mean. I don't make my own music, but I do a radio show (you may have seen my playlists on the IDM list), and it's always a great feeling when someone calls in to say they're into what I'm playing.
As for 'I wanna be Ron Hardy', I dig it. That sharp, woody percussion right there in the middle is really great. I've been more into Acid and stuff like that lately, and this track does nicely.
Hey, mind if I play it on my show next week?
knock yourself out, but e-mail me first because I'm going to re-record it this week, and you can have my definitive version ...
