I know I'm posting a lot today but [Dec. 15th, 2003|09:33 am]

Some guy has written a Roland MT-32 Sound Module Editor. There are several interesting things about this project:

1. That anyone would be enamored enough of the sound of a MT-32 to want to emulate it.

2. That, contrary to the rest of the known universe, which has standardized on VST Instruments, he has written it such that it can only be used through a Windows XP device driver.

3. That his program requires the binary image of the original MT-32 sample ROM.

4. That this ROM requirement has involved him in a legal wrangle with Roland, and further that the EFF thinks there's some principle involved here that makes them willing to provide legal councel in the dsipute.

5. That Roland has, for the moment, had to allow this guy to distribute the MT-32 ROM because they can't come up with proper documentation for their copyright on the MT-32.

I guess the big effing deal about the MT32 is that back at the very beginning of PC-based gaming, several popular games had specific drivers for the MT32 to generate their music, and apparently there's a small but significant number of people who seek to recapture their youth by having an MT32 emulator, with which to reproduce the music from those computer games.

I'm nominating these MT-32 enthusiasts for finding the most obscure possible object of desire to fill the hole in their no-life-having souls.
They make Trekkies look as normal as, say, coin-collectors.
