Belle & Sebastian [Dec. 24th, 2003|06:29 pm]
Okrzyki, przyjaciel!
I never paid attention to Belle & Sebastian before, but sometimes I try to actually listen to the stuff I suck down with Grabit ...

So B&S are ... apparently people who listened to a lot of and Nick Drake. They seem to have a skewed, occasionally too precious, occasionally brilliant lyrics. I can see how people can become big fans, but I'm not 100% sold.

But the song "Expectations" is really funny, well done:
"In the queue for lunch they take the piss, you've got no appetite
And the rumour is you never go with boys and you are tight
So they jab you with a fork, you drop the tray and go berserk
While your cleaning up the mess the teacher's looking up your skirt"

It is interesting being an old fart, because so little new pop music isn't an homage, reinterpretation, or straight up rip off of something I heard the first time around 25 years ago...

Mmm, I haven't heard the new one, but I can't really find much fault with the first two B&S records. Yeah, I know exactly where they're stealing from (in addition to the Nick Drake and Love, I think they upfront gender/sexual confusion stuff is lifted pretty directly from the Smiths), but, as I posted a while back, outright theft has a long respected history in rock & roll... besides they've written some truly great songs: "The State That I Am In", "Seeing Other People", "She's Losing It", etc.

I know what you mean about bands just paying homage or blatantly ripping off older bands. I'm no old fart but I grew up on the old stuff so I know the difference.
Belle and Sebastien were ruined for me by my ex-roommate in the dorms a few years ago. This girl was so fucking awful and all she listened to were B&S. And Jeff Buckley. God.

Don't let some girl in the dorm ruin either B&S or Jeff Buckley for you. Buckley did some amazing work. I met him when he played here, and we had a long conversation about Marching Band, because it turns out in High School he competed with my cousin at the California State Marching Band competition.

He had talent and a phenomenal voice, and it's really horrible that he died so young.

It is terrible he died young. It's been a few years since my roommate and I have been able to listen to Hallelujah and cry once again. One night it came on the jukebox at the Mill and I broke down over my pizza bread.
